 Purpose:

Library & Media Assistants are responsible for assisting with the administration and organization of The Los Angeles Film School Library. Their duties are important in order to keep the library running smoothly as they support patron needs and assist the Library Director.

 

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

●     Checks in and out materials, renews and retrieves reserved items

●     Shelf-reads, sorts, weeds, and organizes library materials

●     Processes and catalog new or donated materials

●     Supports patrons with printing/scanning and other simple tech help they may have

●     Assists students in locating library materials and research articles

●     Enters cataloging data into the library catalog

●     Enters new patron information into the library system

●     Participates in Library Webinars and Zoom calls with other colleagues/students

●     Collects data and generates reports

●     Updates and generate content on library websites, guides, and social media platforms

●     Creates guides, how-to articles, and other helpful tutorials

●     Supports technical issues with students and staff and helps resolve them

●     Acts as a receptionist and transfers calls, emails, or issues to other departments

●     Attends webinars and pursues educational development

●     Collaborates and generates ideas with the team to improve the library's services and collection

●     Other duties and projects as assigned

 

Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

●     May need to select materials to display at the library

●     Participates in school-wide activities, events, and webinars

 

Other Responsibilities:

●     Supports patrons if they need help in other aspects not relating to school matters

●     Assists faculty/staff in acquiring new materials for their course

●     Understands and follows all laws and policies that apply to one's job, and maintains the highest levels of professionalism, ethics, and compliance always

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

●     Helps manage and enforce library standards and policies

●     Oversee and train student workers and other new hires

●     Manage library workflows and procedures

Education and/or Experience:

●     Previous library or similar customer service experience, highly preferred

●     Knowledge of alphabetic and numeric systems for classifying and organizing library materials (LOC)

●     Experience of Koha ILS or similarly integrated library system

●     Experience or a basic understanding of the following software products: Adobe, Photoshop, Avid, Media Composer, ProTools, Final Draft, Zbrush, Indesign, SketchUp, Movie Magic, Logic, etc.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  

●     Bachelor's degree, highly preferred

●     Associate degree

 

Computer Skills:

●     Proficient with Mac OS & PC

●     Proficient with standard office applications (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive)

●     Experience or understanding of HTML, WordPress, Koha ILS, Springshare LibGuides, or similar web-based applications

 

Environmental Factors are those that are required and performed with or without an accommodation.

●     Indirect sunlight

●     Fluorescent lighting

●     Frequent use of computer screens and other tech devices

●     Space can either be very quiet or have minimal talking

●     Exposure to dust from old donated materials or book shelves

●     Chemicals in cleaning supplies

●     Space can be very cold at times

 

Physical Demands are those that are required and performed with or without an accommodation.

●     Heavy lifting of boxes of books may be required from time to time, up to 25 lbs

●     Use of a step ladder to shelve books that are on the top shelves

●     Use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects

●     May need to handle hazardous materials and equipment such as scissors, cutting board, x-acto knife, hot glue gun, laminator, etc for small creative projects

●     Mobility to work in a standard office environment

●     Vision to read handwritten and printed materials and a computer screen

●     Hearing and speech to communicate in person, by telephone, or through virtual meetings

●     Physical ability to sit, stand, or otherwise remain stationary for long periods of time

●     Move throughout the library and access materials on the low and high-leveled ground

●     See details of objects that are less than a few feet away

●     Speak clearly so listeners can understand

●     Use one or two hands to grasp, move, or assemble objects

●     Make fast, repeated movements of fingers, hands, and wrists

 

Emotional and Mental Demands are those that are required and performed with or without an accommodation.

●     Stress may be caused by the requirement to supervise and direct others, complete tasks in a limited time, deal with patrons who exhibit negative behavior, answer diverse requests, communicate with others in small and large settings, and such.
